"Take a Drive"
Tangletown is a neighborhood in the Southwest community of Minneapolis. The neighborhood was officially known as Fuller until 1996 when it was changed to the present name, which reflects the winding streets in the neighborhood that do not conform to the regular street grid of South Minneapolis. The neighborhood boundaries are 46th Street to the north, Interstate 35W to the east, Diamond Lake Road to the south, and Lyndale Avenue South to the west.
The Washburn Park Water Tower is located at the highest point in the neighborhood, while Minnehaha Creek runs through the south side of the neighborhood. Washburn High School is located in this neighborhood.
"Tangletown"
The major bus lines in the city run along every border of Tangletown and the major roads are offering residents with easy access to the rest of Minneapolis including downtown which is only ten minutes away. Tangletown is bordered by the 46th Street on the North, 54th Street and Diamond Lake Road on the South, Lyndale Avenue on the West and Interstate 35W on the east.
William Washburn in 1886 who was the lumber and milling tycoon and former senator of the US from Minnesota along with other investors, bought two hundred acres of farmland in close proximity of Minnehaha Creek for an affluent residential development which will be later on called the Washburn Park. But the tough times of the economy stalled this development and in the early 1900s, the property was sold with development that continued through the 1920s.
Although most homes in the neighborhood were built between the 1910 and 1920s and are in the Revival Period styles of that time which were mainly Colonial and Tudor, there are Victorian homes also from the 1880s, the largest cluster or Lustron metal homes of the city. These homes were constructed in the late 1940s out of pre-fabricated steel to home returning veterans of the World War. They are located along Nicollet Avenue and modernist homes from the 1950s that were constructed along the Minnehaha Creek.
There are two public schools in the neighborhood of Tangletown namely the Ramsey International Fine Arts Center and the Washburn High School. The public facilities of Tangletown include Fuller Park and Recreation Center that includes a basketball court, wading pool, beautiful garden, paths and programs throughout the year. The other facilities offered to the public are Minnehaha Creek and Parkway in which paths and trails follow the creek across town, Washburn Library which is located at the West 53rd Street and Lyndale Avenue and finally, the Washburn Park Water Tower that was built in 1931.
The home purchase or home improvement incentive offered to residents is the Tangletown Home Improvement Program. If you wish to get involved in the activities and events of the neighborhood, the Tangletown Neighborhood Association provides opportunities to those residents and visitors that are willing to spend some of their time and effort in helping the community programs and plans to be implemented.
